All three sit within about 30 minutes of each other and are almost always visited together on a single day trip from Accra, roughly 2.5-3 hours each way.
Cape Coast Castle: history that stays with you
Built in 1664, Cape Coast Castle was a central hub of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, and guided tours through its dungeons and the 'Door of No Return' give a direct account of that history. For diaspora visitors tracing ancestry, this is frequently described as the most meaningful stop of an entire Ghana trip. Tours run roughly 1 to 1.5 hours; entrance fees differ for Ghanaian citizens (bring a Ghana Card) versus foreign visitors.
Elmina Castle: the oldest European structure in sub-Saharan Africa
Elmina Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482, is the oldest European-built structure in sub-Saharan Africa and sits roughly 17 minutes from Cape Coast Castle by road. The two are almost always paired on the same visit. Elmina's fishing harbour, still active today, adds a living contrast to the castle's difficult history.

Kakum National Park and the canopy walkway
Kakum protects roughly 375 square kilometres of tropical rainforest and is best known for its 350-metre canopy walkway, suspended between the treetops — one of the few of its kind in Africa. A gate/parking fee applies (around GH₵35, subject to change) plus a separate walkway fee. Arriving by 7am gives the best chance of a quieter walkway and cooler conditions; comfortable closed shoes are worth packing, since there's real hiking involved and the walkway sways underfoot.
Assin Manso and the diaspora heritage trail
Assin Manso, inland from Cape Coast, holds the Slave River — the last bathing site for captives before the journey to the coast's slave forts. Many diaspora visitors combine this stop with Cape Coast and Elmina castles to complete the fuller arc of the heritage trail, from capture through to the 'Door of No Return.'
Beaches and the coastal towns
Beyond the history, Central Region's coastline includes Brenu Akyinim Beach, a quieter alternative to Accra's busier beaches, popular for an easy afternoon after a morning at the castles.

The dry season (November-March) is generally most comfortable for the Kakum canopy walk and castle tours, though the region is visitable year-round.
