7 Best Day Trips From Accra (And the Right Car for Each)

Quick Answer

The best day trips from Accra range from a 1-hour drive to Aburi Botanical Gardens to a 4-hour trip to Wli Falls. Paved-road destinations like Aburi and Ada suit a sedan or SUV; waterfall and hiking routes like Wli and Boti are safer and more comfortable in an SUV or 4x4.

1. Aburi Botanical Gardens — 1 hour, any vehicle

Cool hill-climate gardens and a lively craft market just outside Accra. The road is fully paved, so any sedan handles it comfortably — this is the easiest first trip for a family with young kids or a self-drive rental with no off-road needs.

2. Ada & the Volta Estuary — 1.5 hours, sedan or SUV

Where the Volta River meets the sea. Roads are paved and flat the whole way; an SUV adds comfort for a group with beach gear and coolers, but a sedan will get you there fine.

3. Boti Falls & Umbrella Rock — 2 hours, SUV recommended

Twin waterfalls and unusual rock formations in the Eastern Region. The final stretch has some unpaved sections, so an SUV with a bit more ground clearance is the safer, more comfortable choice over a low sedan.

4. Cape Coast Castle & Kakum National Park — 3 hours, MPV for groups

A full-day historical and nature loop — the Cape Coast slave castle and Kakum's canopy walk. Roads are good highway the whole way; for a family or group, an MPV keeps everyone together for the long drive.

5. Elmina — 3 hours, sedan or SUV

Often paired with Cape Coast on the same day. The historic fishing harbour and castle are a short detour from the main route, no special vehicle requirements.

6. Kwahu Escarpment — 3–4 hours, 4x4 recommended

Dramatic hill views and, in the August paragliding season, a genuinely spectacular day out. The climbing roads and occasional rough patches make a 4x4 or high-clearance SUV the better call, especially after rain.

7. Wli Falls — 4 hours, 4x4 essential

Ghana's tallest waterfall, in the Volta Region. The approach road has unpaved, uneven sections that a standard sedan will struggle with — this is the one trip on this list where we'd actively discourage a low-clearance car and recommend a 4x4 or rugged SUV with an experienced driver.

What to pack for any of these trips

Regardless of destination, a few things make any day trip from Accra smoother: cash in small denominations for informal parking attendants and roadside snacks (card acceptance drops off quickly outside the city), a printed or downloaded offline map as backup since signal gets patchy past Kwahu and the Volta Region, sunscreen and water — Ghana's midday sun is stronger than it feels in the car — and comfortable closed shoes for anywhere involving a trail (Boti Falls, Wli Falls, Kakum's canopy walk).

Best time to leave Accra

For anywhere within 2 hours (Aburi, Ada, Boti Falls), leaving by 8am avoids both Accra's morning rush and gives a full day at the destination. For the longer trips (Cape Coast, Kwahu, Wli Falls), leaving by 6:30-7am is worth the early start — it means arriving before midday heat and tour-bus crowds, and having margin for the return drive before dark, since driving Ghana's rural roads at night is best avoided regardless of vehicle.

Self-drive or chauffeured for these routes?

Aburi, Ada and Elmina are straightforward enough for confident self-drive on paved roads throughout. Cape Coast and Kakum are self-drive friendly too, though a chauffeur means one less thing to think about on a long day. For Boti Falls, Kwahu and especially Wli Falls, we'd lean toward a chauffeur — not because the driving is difficult, but because a driver who's made the trip before knows exactly where the road roughens, where to park, and how to time the return before dark.

Turning any of these into a package

Several of these routes are already built into our tour packages with fixed, transparent pricing — the Cape Coast & Kakum Heritage day, and the Aburi & Akosombo Nature day, both cover exactly the trips described above with a vehicle, driver and route included. If your ideal day mixes stops from this list in a way that isn't already packaged, tell us the combination and we'll build a custom quote around it.
